Thyroid Q & A

What is the thyroid?

Your thyroid is a bowtie-shaped gland located in your neck. It synthesizes and secretes a number of different hormones that are collectively referred to as your thyroid hormones. These hormones act as chemical messengers that tell various body systems what to do.

Your thyroid hormones play an important role in:

  • Metabolism
  • Heartbeat
  • Body temperature
  • Mood
  • Digestion
  • Muscle control

Any disruption in the production of these hormones can cause a number of symptoms.

What are common symptoms of thyroid problems?

Thyroid problems develop if your thyroid gland produces too few (hypothyroidism) or too many (hyperthyroidism) of the essential thyroid hormones. Your symptoms differ depending on whether you’re suffering from hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Common symptoms caused by hypothyroidism include:

  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Puffy face
  • Depression

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism. It’s an autoimmune condition that causes your body to produce antibodies that attack and destroy your thyroid.

Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Agitation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty sleeping

There are many reasons why your body may overproduce thyroid hormones. An autoimmune disorder called Grave’s Disease is one of the most common causes. This condition triggers your immune system to produce antibodies that increase the production of thyroid hormones.

How do I know if I have a thyroid problem?

Dr. Venkatesh determines if you have thyroid problems after a comprehensive examination. In addition to a physical exam and a review of your symptoms, Dr. Venkatesh may also run special blood tests to assess your hormone levels. He may also look for specific antibodies to determine the underlying cause or your hormonal changes.

How are thyroid conditions managed?

Treatment for your thyroid condition depends on whether you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, and the underlying cause of your hormonal changes. Dr. Venkatesh takes an individualized approach to care and creates a treatment plan specific to you that helps improve your overall health and quality of life.
