Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes your blood sugar, also known as blood glucose, to be higher than normal. The sugar in your blood comes from the food you eat and provides your cells with energy. Insulin, a hormone made in your pancreas, helps get the sugar from your blood into cells.

In some people, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin produced doesn’t work right, allowing the sugar to stay in the blood and raise blood sugar levels. Over time, the excess sugar in your blood damages your blood vessels and organs, leading to other health issues.

There are three primary types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes: pancreas doesn’t produce an adequate supply of insulin
  • Type 2 diabetes: insulin doesn’t work as it should
  • Gestational diabetes: high blood sugars during pregnancy

Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent than Type 1 diabetes, and having gestational diabetes during pregnancy increases your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

How do I know if I have diabetes?

Many people in the United States have diabetes and don’t know it. Regular visits to Dr. Venkatesh at Seven Hills Medical Center help you stay on top of your health and monitor for risk factors that may indicate diabetes.

Dr. Venkatesh offers diabetes screening tests to measure your blood sugar levels to either indicate risk factors or determine if you have diabetes. These tests include:

  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Fasting blood sugar
  • Random blood glucose test

If Dr. Venkatesh finds abnormalities in your blood tests that indicate you’re at risk for diabetes, he provides treatments to reduce your risk of developing the chronic disease.

How is diabetes treated?

Dr. Venkatesh takes a holistic approach to care and creates individualized plans to help you gain control over your diabetes and reduce your risk of health complications.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Diet modification
  • Exercise
  • Medication

If you’re overweight or obese, losing weight may significantly improve your blood sugar numbers. Dr. Venkatesh is a board-certified obesity physician with a thorough weight-loss program that can help you lose weight quickly and safely.

Diabetes is a chronic disease but can be managed when you have the right tools. For expert care of your health, call Seven Hills Medical Center today or book online.
